Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck) was an American performer and actress with a career that spanned 40 years. London was a torch-singing singer known for her smooth, mellow vocals and her languid contralto voice she recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955 and 1969. Her recording of "Cry me a river" which she released on her debut album, was admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated in 1974 to the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her role in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her career as an actress. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 when she was cast in films. They included roles as the lead female role in several westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958), and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional musical career. In 1969 she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be a star in television's Emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) In the show, she appeared alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
